Supporting Transgender Youth

Transgender students are disproportionally affected by negative mental and sexual health outcomes. School nurses are well positioned to combat these outcomes through affirming nursing care, especially when transgender students are socially transitioning. Adopting school nondiscrimination and anti-bullying policies that enumerate or specifically include actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity or expression is a researched based approach to support students. In order for school nurses to participate and lead in the adoption of such policies and practices, they must first understand the nature of sexual and gender identity.

Outcomes of this program:

• Nurses will gain an appreciation for the challenges transgender youth experience
• Nurses will be able to articulate the biology of human sexual development
• Nurses will report increased confidence in their ability to discuss gender issues with students
• Nurses will understand how districts can incorporate  inclusive policies that support transgender youth
• Nurses will identify measures they can use or change  in their individual practice as a result of this program

Registration

Registration on or before Friday, August 2 is $45.00 per person. In order to register one must create a DPI MyQuickReg account at widpi.myquickreg.com/register.
